A is for Appliqué

Do you find inspiration from textiles? We’d love to hear what inspires you and hope that you enjoy our A-Z of textile series… From fibre to cloth to technique to the artists creating works of art.

We start with an appreciation for Appliqué. The term originates from the Latin word applicō meaning I apply and then from the French word appliquer meaning to attach.

Appliqué is a needlework technique used to create patterns or a scene where shapes or fragments of fabrics are stitched by hand or machine onto larger backing fabrics. Appliqué is a well-practised technique and comes from humble beginnings, originally used to patch holes dating back to ancient Egypt. Over the years it has been used creatively and decoratively by groups and artists from all over the world and examples include church banners, costumes, clothing and quilting.

One of our favourite artists Mandy Pattullo (work pictured above and below) uses patchwork, appliqué and hand stitching techniques in her work, bringing together precious fragments of old quilts and garments, find out more about Mandy and her work at mandypattullo.co.uk
