We caught up with Ekta Kaul who will be teaching The Art of Kantha in our online class 30 & 31 March 2021. We asked her about how she got to where she is today and her inspiration…
D is for Draping
Draping is a technique used in dressmaking and one favoured by fashion designer, Christine Mayer. Christine was a student of Tamotsu Kondo, a Draping artist from Japan. She says
“He taught us how to create patterns three-dimensional directly on a mannequin. This unconventional way of creating patterns was completely new to me and it was a breakthrough moment. It was like being offered an instrument of freedom. Once I had learnt the method, I NEVER created a two-dimensional pattern again. I started to experiment with the classical method of Draping using recycled materials, moulding and patching them directly on the dress form. This was in a time when Upcycling was not common. I guess I have been a pioneer of it in a way.”
We are delighted to share an online taster class with Christine where she uses two men’s shirts to create a dress by draping them over her dress form. You can follow her directions and learn how she works to create a beautiful new piece that fits perfectly with pleats, darts and folds. Click the link below to find out more and download the class.
If you have enjoyed the class, why not sign up to learn more with our Draping and Upcycling Retreat with Christine from 10-18 June 2021?
Happy draping!
