Textiles at Goodnestone

Thursday 5 - Friday 13 October 2023

Join us in 2023 for Textiles at Goodnestone, an 8-night luxury retreat that offers the perfect combination of creativity, exploration and relaxation in an 18th century stately home in the countryside of Kent in the UK.

Textile artist Mandy Pattullo returns to teach two projects incorporating vintage quilts and traditional appliqué and in 2023 she will be joined Ekta Kaul, a London-based artist best known for her pared down stitched maps. Together they offer 5.5 days of full-time instruction in the light and airy Coach House studio.

We’ll visit some beautiful places during the week including historic 17th century *Ham House on the banks of the river Thames and Ightham Mote, a medieval moated manor house and gardens. We’ll also take time out from our creative stitching to visit Sissinghurst, one of the most famous gardens in England created by gardener and author Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold Nicolson.

Goodnestone is an elegant house which was fully renovated in 2016 and modern comforts were cleverly interwoven into the original Queen Anne building. You’ll have the chance to learn more about its history through a house and garden tour and explore the estate through optional accompanied walks during the week, amongst them the restored 18th century Serpentine Path which winds through parkland and chalk grassland and a stroll to a local atmospheric pub for an early evening drink. We’ll also visit the pretty town of Rye during the week.

All meals and wine with dinner are included (with the exception of two lunches out). Breakfast includes a cooked option, lunch is 2-course and dinner 3-course. We’ll have an early buffet-style supper on one evening followed by a film for anyone who’d enjoy it. With a cooking demonstration also part of the week’s activities you’ll end your time with us feeling refreshed and entertained, with new friendships made or old ones renewed and with several hand-stitched textile projects to remind you of your stay at Goodnestone.

The retreat begins in the car park of the Petersham Hotel in Richmond-upon-Thames at 10am on Thursday 5th October and ends at the Petersham on Friday 13th October 2023.

*If we can get tickets (no guarantees!), instead of Ham House we will visit Red House, iconic Arts and Crafts home of William and Jane Morris and the centre of the Pre-Raphaelite circle.
