Textiles at Goodnestone Park
Saturday 8 - Monday 17 October 2022
Join artists Mandy Pattullo and Anna Corba for a special textile and paper collage retreat at Goodnestone Park, a glorious stately home built in 1704 and the family seat of Julian, 22nd Lord Fitzwalter. In the 19th century Jane Austen’s brother, Edward, lived at Goodnestone Park and Jane was a frequent visitor. Her diary entries from the time mention parties and dances at Goodnestone and she was reputedly inspired to write Pride and Prejudice after a particularly sociable stay.
Our daily classes with textile artist Mandy Pattullo and paper artist Anna Corba will take place in the former Coach House which is a light and airy space across the courtyard from the main house, next to the historic walled garden. Mandy is a British artist with an international reputation who uses tattered and worn fabrics to create collaged works of art. She loves to use old quilts in her work, carefully unpicking the layers and using what she discovers to create unique textile collages, hand-stitching the fragments in place with embroidery and appliqué. Well-worn books, music scores, postcards, ribbons and lace are US artist Anna Corba’s stock in trade and she will show you how these simple materials can be transformed into a range of projects from hand-bound journals, tags and ornaments, as well as sewn notions.
The retreat begins in leafy Richmond-upon-Thames, close to London’s Heathrow airport, where we will gather. Our first adventure is a visit to style emporium Petersham Nurseries for shopping and lunch before continuing by coach to Goodnestone Park in Kent, 2 hours southeast of London.
Kent is a pretty county, known as the garden of England owing to a tradition of growing fruit and hops for beer making. We’ll take time out from the workshops to visit nearby Canterbury famous for its 11th century cathedral which is a world heritage site and one of the oldest Christian structures in Britain. Back at Goodnestone there’ll be leisurely accompanied walks, massage and other treatments for those who would enjoy those options.
Our cordon bleu trained private chef will prepare delicious meals using fresh, local ingredients. We’ll have one dinner and one lunch out, one at a quintessential British pub dating from 1286 and the other at a local restaurant acclaimed for its food (meals out at guest’s cost). We return to London via the Red House, the iconic arts and crafts home of William and Jane Morris and the centre of the pre-raphaelite circle. We’ll arrive in London early evening, in time for our farewell dinner and final overnight stay at a hotel in Richmond.

YOUR ARTISTS
Goodnestone Park underwent a large-scale renovation in 2016 when modern comforts were cleverly interwoven into the original, resulting in a brilliant fusion of classical elegance with a sleek 21st century accent. The stunning reception rooms are made for entertaining and relaxation and the twelve divine bedrooms, many decorated in homage to family members, are furnished with the most comfortable beds imaginable. Most have en-suite bathrooms and all have glorious views over the park or garden (enough to make you want to stay in bed all day). There is excellent wifi throughout the property.
The Jane Austen connection makes a stay at Goodnestone Park extra special. Take time out from the workshop to wander through the Walled Garden or woodland walks or follow in Jane's footsteps along the restored 18th century Serpentine Path winding through parkland, woods and chalk grassland.
